Food Truck Rental

Starting a gourmet food truck business can become a profitable and rewarding career for chefs and entrepreneurs. The start up costs are typically much lower than that of traditional brick-and-mortar restaurants. But even though the costs are significantly lower, it may not be low enough for everyone yearning to build a prosperous food truck business. Buying your own truck could cost between $80,000 to $200,000 or more depending on the design and functionality. If those costs seem too high when you are just starting out, then you should consider a food truck rental.

Why Rent Instead Of Buying A Food Truck?

Some companies will rent fully equipped mobile kitchens nationwide. These are completely turnkey systems that are ready to be put in use as soon as you receive delivery. Just as a lot of traditional restaurants rent their space from a landlord, you can do the same in the form of a mobile food truck. Renting your truck allows you to also test out your food truck business plan without having to make the expensive commitment of purchasing your own vehicle. A lot of these rentals offer state-of-the-art kitchens and even cash register systems that can be connected wirelessly to a central database.

One of the downsides of renting a mobile food truck is that you may or may not be able to do much customization to it. Afterall, they were built to be ready to go as soon as you sign the lease. But that shouldn’t prevent you from considering a rental. You can still customize it to some extent with vehicle wrap graphics, signage, etc. It may be possible for the owners of the truck to help you swap out equipment if your business requires dedicated gear to accomodate your menu.

If you do go the route of renting your food truck, make sure you read the terms and conditions. Find out what you’re responsible for as far as repairs go. Is there a reduction in rent for signing multiple years? Are there any penalties for ending the lease early? Every situation is going to be different so you’ll have to read the fine print. It wouldn’t hurt to have your lawyer look over all the paperwork you have.

How Much Does It Cost To Rent A Food Truck?

With a food truck rental, you can roughly expect to pay about $2000 a month. Of course, it can vary widely depending on the type of truck, it’s age or even the condition of the vehicle. But obviously there are benefits to renting… namely renting offers much less risk and start-up costs. Some successful food trucks can often make enough revenue in one day to pay for a whole month’s rent. So renting is something you should definitely consider if you plan on jumping into this industry.
